Our Community Garden wins big at Growing Communities Horticultural Show

From very small seeds, beauty grows!

Community Garden core volunteers celebrating their win!

It was a last-minute entry, but OC Community Garden led by Ivan Bertram won a few prizes at Growing Communities Horticultural Show in Helensburgh on Saturday! They had 12 entries, and won first prize in 6 entries including for spring onions and turnips. Two categories won 2nd prize and a further 2 categories won third prize. Overall, the Community Garden in Cove & Kilcreggan won Third Prize, behind Rosneath Community Garden at second prize and Rhu Edible garden winning the first prize.

This is a great start for the Community Garden, which got off and going with raised beds and a poly tunnel only 18 months ago, with the help of the National Lottery Community Fund, the Council and Argyll & Bute Climate Action Fund (ABCAN) and some big volunteer input. They produce for the local community (thank you Kilcreggan Post Office!) and now have won a few wee prizes but have made many new friendships along the way. Each week in summer, the produce is available at the Kilcreggan Post Office. There is a donation box placed there, should you wish to leave a token of your appreciation for the vegetables.

Next stop for the Community Garden is setting up a deer fence. Thanks to the Mushroom Trust funding, they will be working on it soon.(For details of the Mushroom trust funding to set up the deer fence, click here). The Community Garden volunteers meet on Sunday and Thursdays (see poster below) and they welcome volunteers and visitors.
