According to William Higgins (RBLS Helensburgh), “The scoring was out of 110 points; we scored 109. So we have now been entered into the National competition. The judging will be done in secret again in August.”
It is wonderful news for the community who has come together to support and contribute to maintaining the memorial and applying for the competition. Led by Mr Geoff Coles, Chairman of the Royal British Legion Scotland (Helensburgh Branch), various members of the Cove & Kilcreggan community have been instrumental in sprucing it up. These are the 1st Peninsula Explorers, Alan Hier Gardening & Landscaping Services, Jonathan Ward, Christine Menhennet & her friends from the Craigrownie Gardening Club, Joe Lawson (retired submariner) who built the plant troughs, A&B Gardening department for plants in the memorial soil and residents of the villages in helping keep the area tidy.
The memorial committee would like to thank all of the above, and extend a call to anyone else who might like to volunteer to assist at any time.
In addition, thanks also goes out to several contributors for their donations. Among them are the Royal British Legion Scotland (Helensburgh Branch), Cove & Kilcreggan Community Council, Cove & Kilcreggan Community Trust, Our Community in Cove & Kilcreggan and a private donation from the Davies family in Kilcreggan.
The Cove & Kilcreggan War Memorial stands opposite the Cove Burgh Hall, and is a restful place for contemplation. If you haven’t seen it, do spend some there in this wonderful sunshine!
