“Highland Boundary Fault Stile” officially opened in Kilcreggan

The Cove and Kilcreggan Arts and Heritage Groups are delighted to announce the successful unveiling of ‘Highland Boundary Fault Stile’, a new public sculpture by Maya Rose Edwards, at King George V Playing Fields, Kilcreggan, on Saturday 6 December. Members of the local Scout group led the opening by walking over the stile, ceremonially welcoming the artwork into everyday community use and marking the passage of the Highland Boundary Fault through the Rosneath Peninsula. A rowan tree was planted beside the sculpture as part of the celebration, with Gauri Raje sharing stories about the tree’s cultural significance, deepening links between geology, landscape, and local culture.

The event concluded with a public Q&A in which Edwards spoke with Arts Group member, Cat Auburn about the process of developing the work. The sculpture takes the form of a stile that the public can climb, imaginatively crossing the Highland Boundary Fault. Because the fault is too vast to perceive at ground level, the stile offers a clear marker for this important feature, inviting us to consider the deep time of a landscape far larger and older than any human life. The stile is made from stone from both sides of the HBF—red sandstone from the Lowlands (south) side and green schist from the Highlands (north) side. The sculpture is accompanied by a brass QR code that links to a PDF with information about the project, the artwork, and local geology and landmarks. Edwards expressed their delight at entrusting the sculpture to the community’s safekeeping, noting that it is designed to age naturally and gather moss and patina over time.

Although geologist Bill Henderson was unable to attend due to illness, his earlier Community Geology Walk helped shape the project, alongside a Children’s Art Workshop at Cove Park developed by Edwards with the support of Emma Henderson, Curator of Engagement.

Commissioned by the Arts and Heritage Groups of Our Community Cove and Kilcreggan in partnership with Cove Park, and funded through a share of the National Lottery’s Awards for All, the project artistically interprets the Highland Boundary Fault as both a geological and cultural feature.
