Our Community supports local student for project for advancing education in Honduras

Our Community is pleased to support local Cove resident, Erin Morrison, towards her goal of raising 6,850 pounds to take a year out before going to university and to work on her project of advancing education in Honduras, through the Project Trust Foundation. We will be giving her a grant of GBP 400 from the Community Lottery Fund.

Erin is a final year student of secondary school in Helensburgh, has attended the Youth Cafe and Sailing Club for years, and participated in community fund-raising events for Cove Burgh Hall. She was also part of the Ocean Youth Trust boat trip in 2022.

As part of her gap year, she hopes to volunteer for 8 months in a rural part of Honduras providing English lessons for children from less fortunate backgrounds to improve their knowledge of English, and enhance their social, critical and collaborative skills. Project Trust, through whom she hopes to work, is a registered charity that has provided training and support to over 8,000 young people (aged 17-25 years) in Britain since 1967. The charity provides opportunities to volunteer in countries globally, supporting education and/ or child development.

In supporting Erin towards her funding goal, Tom Walker who initiated and runs the Community Lottery says, “Our Community Lottery was established to generate funds to support young people (25 years and under) living in our villages. These funds are used to help local groups focused on youth, such as the Youth Cafe or the Scouts, support community assets hosting youth activities like the Cove Burgh Hall, organise events for young people such as Gala Days, and provide financial assistance to individuals for life-enriching experiences. The Board decided to make a contribution to Erin’s costs to support her to volunteer abroad, gaining valuable skills and giving back to another local community overseas. Stories like hers show how contributions to the Community Lottery can change lives.

Erin is fund-raising in multiple ways including a sponsored walk of the West Highland Way, a month-long swimming challenge everyday, a bake sale, part-time jobs and many other events. She also has a JustGiving page, where you can contribute to her target of GBP 6,850, which will enable her travel and meet costs of basic necessities such as food & lodgings with a host family in Honduras. ABOUT THE COMMUNITY LOTTERY FUND:

Applications are open to anyone supporting youth-focused initiatives within our community of Cove & Kilcreggan. To apply, individuals/ groups should submit a brief proposal outlining thier event or project, and how it will benefit young people in our villages.

Each application is considered on its own merit, with particular attention to the positive impact it will have on young people. Funding is available for events and projects that align with the fund’s purpose, and all applications are welcome.

Availability of funds is a restricting factor and the funds, based on current income, are fully committed until the end of this calendar year. However, the more money that the Community Lottery raises, the more young people we can support!

It is said in many cultures, “It takes a village to raise our children.” By joining Our Community Lottery, you can directly help us create more opportunities for local young people.
