Glorious Beach Exploration Day for Clearwater Group despite storm Baelo

Clearwater Beach Exploration Day: Learning, Discovering & Protecting Our Seas!

Despite warnings of an approaching storm, the Clearwater Group went ahead with our Beach Exploration Day on Saturday, and we’re delighted to say it was a fantastic success!

We were thrilled to welcome the 1st Peninsula Scouts for a day of hands-on learning, discovery, competitions, exhibits, and, of course, plenty of snacks!

Getting our hands dirty for science!

One of the highlights was our live beach investigation table. Natural debris collected from the shoreline was brought into the hall, where the Scouts got hands-on examining the different types of seaweed and the fascinating marine life found living on or amongst it.

There was plenty of curiosity, lots of questions, and some wonderfully enthusiastic budding researchers! The day generated a wealth of information, observations, and learning about the environmental challenges facing our local waters and oceans around the world.

Learning from the legend himself

After all that exploring, everyone enjoyed hot drinks, snacks, and food while watching Sir David Attenborough’s Ocean documentary.

The film highlighted some important messages about how we can protect our seas and help marine ecosystems recover:

  •  Give nature room to recover. Marine protected areas where fishing is restricted can allow marine life to regenerate. Over time, those benefits can spread beyond protected boundaries, potentially supporting healthier fish populations and more sustainable fisheries.

  •  Protect our precious seabed. Destructive practices such as bottom trawling and dredging can damage seabed habitats, disturb marine ecosystems, and release stored carbon, as well as contributing to the depletion of fish and shellfish stocks.

  •  Small actions can make a big difference.Understanding what is happening in our oceans is the first step towards making better choices and protecting the natural world for future generations.

We were delighted that the Scouts enjoyed the experience, and their participation also helped them work towards their Blue Peter badge!

Clearwater: Making a difference beyond the beach

Our work doesn’t stop here! The Clearwater Group continues to get involved in environmental activities at local and national levels. We now also have a volunteer in place to regularly test the burns along our shoreline as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award, helping us better understand the health of our local waterways.

 What’s next?

Our next Beach Exploration Day is planned for the spring. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for kinder weather and hope to welcome even more members of the public to join us!

Our aim is simple but important: to raise awareness, encourage community involvement, and help protect and restore the ecosystems we all depend on.

As the messages from Ocean remind us, the future of our seas depends on the choices we make today. By learning, sharing knowledge, and taking action, we can all play a part in creating healthier oceans for generations to come.

A huge thank you to the 1st Peninsula Scouts, our volunteers, and everyone who helped make the day such a success!

Together, let’s keep exploring, learning, and protecting our blue planet!
