Peaton Woods Workday

Peaton Woods Work Day

Please note: This workday departs from the usual 3rd Saturday of every month!

This is because it coincides with the trustees Week of 24th - 30th September. If you do go along to this work day, you can meet some of the trustees of Peaton Woods! And a very interesting bunch, they are too!

The usual arrangements are to meet at 11 am in the usual spot by the telephone exchange at the bottom of Peaton Road on the Loch Long side:

Bring any refreshment you may need (and possibly some midge protection) as well as any work gloves and loppers you have.  There are usually spares for those that need them.  Biscuits provided by Jeanne at the break.

If there are any questions, Christoph will have his mobile on the day (07952 175 743), but signal in the woodland is patchy so calls may be missed.

Part of the work is to restore the woodland to just native trees of a temperate rainforest, hence much of the current work is cutting back and stopping the spread of Rhododendron ponticum. Non-native trees are being removed.

Some of these non-native trees are Beech saplings, which are being pulled out by the roots, where possible.  Many of these are viable and are available for use elsewhere, for example, replacing gaps in existing hedging.  In fact, many of these saplings have already been used in the area filling hedge gaps in gardens, and also forming part of the hedge boundary in the Community Garden.  If anybody wants some Beech saplings, please contact the Environmental (Green) Group here, but do note they come in various sizes.
