Ongoing Research & Local Projects
Local History Collection
Preservation of the local history collection held in Cove Burgh Hall Community Library
The local history collection is under the custodianship of the Peninsula Amenity Society, held at Cove Community Library. It consists of many rare manuscript documents and publications. Many of these publications are out-of-print.
The Heritage Group and the Amenity Society are working towards cataloguing the collection. They are considering both security and long-term resilience for supersession to oncoming generations. To achieve this, the Heritage Group is actively liaising with a professional archivist.
Requirements and equipment costs have been estimated. Professional fees are less easy to estimate, and a project scoping exercise is required.
Our current aim is to gain grant funding to conduct a scoping exercise. This would enable us to receive professional advice and support.
Heritage Trails
To convert the Rosneath Peninsula Heritage Trails to QR Codes
The Rosneath Peninsula East and West Heritage Trails were created 5 years ago by Richard Reeves, a resident of the villages, and distributed to local outlets in paper form for access to the general public. They were updated annually as required for a new reprint.
So far, they have been financed by the Community Council. To save costs, we intend to convert the information from paper-based maps to QR codes ready for the 2026 summer season.
Street Furniture
Lost Heritage
Cove and Kilcreggan has a distinctive land- and sea-scape which is enhanced by its street furniture. Mileage panels are one example. There are many other items which have not fared so well: the old cast iron lamp posts have been removed during various “improvements” and only a small number remain.
Two projects are currently underway with volunteer support:
A Water Fountain project which seeks to restore this previously lost item and reverse the trend.
Three telephone boxes (Cove, Kilcreggan and Fairfield) have been adopted by Our Community. The proposal is to be repurpose them so that they remain “alive” within the villages.
Richard Reeves, a member of the Heritage Group, has been researching the street furniture of Cove and Kilcreggan and is due to publish his research in booklet form in the near future.
